Leon, remember Stanley, New Zealand stylist started at Manchester on the first day. Had to sleep on the salon floor for a few days and wash in the bathroom. Sassoon hadn't arranged for accommodation and didn't pay him so the manager had to pay him out of petty cash. I got a phone call from him on a busy Saturday morning at Bond St salon, he was at Heathrow airport. Bugger this Flint, I didn't sigh up for this nonsense, I'm going home. 2 years later I visited him in his salon. He had a sports car and after work went surfing. He is now a property developer but still cuts hair in his one chair salon overlooking his surf beach.

Baleage is considered a French technique but its plain to see that in fact it was between Flint, Darryll and Anne that this technique was invented by them and has been around 50 years. The only thing French about Baleage is the name.

I'm sure it must have been done before but we had a new cutting technique to colour to. We had been studying cubism and Impressionism and applied their principals ( segment cutting, each segment starting off one colour and grading into another colour, usually its opposite on the colour wheel. ) Then I got Annie to dab blobs of colour on the hair a la Seurat's Pointillism. Ash based colour created dead spots, yellow ( gold ) based colour produced light and perceived lift. Didn't photograph well but played tricks on the eyes in real life. None of my work was photographed officially and Darryll's internal concave cut was blind to the camera. Photographing 3 dimensional shapes is a waste of time, doesn't give you any information.
